FAQ

(as of July 12, 2010)

Who are you?

We are Pearl Girls Productions, a production family focused on increasing representation of (queer) Asian women in media.

Allison Santos a visual artist. Anni Gee is a “dabbler” (her words… you figure that one out). Claire Kim works in the fashion industry. N. Ki is writes. Narinda Heng is a poet. And Vicky Luu is a filmmaker/writer.

Why did you make TWSS?

After seeing what was out there in mainstream LGBTQIA media, we decided to pool our resources/talents and create something we as Asian Americans could relate to. And we wanted to work together on something awesome. Because we love each other.

So why LA?

Because we live here. : )

Why are your episodes so short?

We wanted to make something accessible to people who are low on time or on high-speed internet connections. And we produced this independently, with our own funds and on our own time–so shorter webisodes made more sense.

And who knows?? Maybe in the future they’ll be longer… maybe.

So why do you have a predominantly Asian cast?

There are a whole lot of Gaysians (and Asians) out there. Really. Sometimes we’re in disguise, and sometimes people are just not looking hard enough. But we’re here. And we want to see ourselves in the media!!

So this is ourselves. Literally.

Are you all really… y’know?

What? Gay? Yes. Some… okay, most of us. ; )

Are you the same ethnicities as your characters?

Sometimes. We’re Khmer, Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, and Filipino (-American).

Where’d you get your awesome music?

Mostly local artists and friends. We welcome submissions! Send us an email if you’re interested: contact[at]twssonline[dot]com.

How did you guys pull this off?

Our greatest resource has been PEOPLE– tons of supportive friends, community members, business owners, etc. have helped us make this possible. We are incredibly thankful for their (and your) support!

Do you have any other projects in the works?

Yes! Pearl Girls Productions is currently working on a documentary about queer Korean women in Los Angeles. Stay tuned for details!
